HANNOVER MESSE 2025

On 3 April 2025, our partner Nikolaj Candellari from CyberGrid presented the InterSTORE project at HANNOVER MESSE 2025, showcasing the latest advancements in energy interoperability — widely regarded as the cornerstone of the energy system transition in alignment with EU directives (NZIA). In this context, the InterSTORE project aims to transform the future of Energy Communities through the use of free IEEE2030.5, by developing open-source software that enables seamless communication across diverse energy assets.

At the HM2025 event, Sebastian Kosslers from VDE DKE served as moderator, while Ludwig Karg of the sister project Int:net shared insights into the current state of interoperability systems and developments.

Nikolaj contributed by addressing the following key points:

  • Interoperability as the Key to Energy Transition – Aligning with EU directives for a smarter, more connected energy system.

  • Revolutionising Battery Communication – Leveraging IEEE2030.5 and NATS messaging to support diverse use cases.

  • Bridging the Gap with a Legacy Protocol Converter – Ensuring smooth integration across different energy technologies.

  • Real-World Implementation in an Energy Community Pilot – Demonstrating efficiency gains over current communication methods.

  • CyberGrid’s Optimisation Algorithm – Enhancing energy utilisation while reducing stress on the grid.

This innovative approach is built on the IEEE2030.5 standard and the NATS messaging system. Beyond developing libraries that encapsulate the protocol’s logic, the project has delivered a suite of supporting tools, including comprehensive testing procedures and a legacy protocol converter. These tools were rigorously deployed in an Energy Community pilot, aiming to prove their advantages over existing communication systems.

Furthermore, the Energy Community pilot extended beyond communication enhancements. CyberGrid developed a dedicated optimisation algorithm designed to maximise the value of generated energy while simultaneously relieving pressure on the grid.

As decentralised energy systems continue to grow, seamless integration becomes increasingly essential. Open-source solutions such as those developed by InterSTORE play a pivotal role in maximising energy efficiency, enhancing grid stability, and accelerating the energy transition.
